How to Fix Rigging Springs on Upholstered Swivel Chairs

Oct 26th

Irregular springs on upholstered swivel chairs make a creak every time someone sits on the chair. Old steel springs end up doubling over time and can even rust in high humidity environments. Accessing them allows you to locate the problem of creaking and provide the long-term solution that will be best for the chair. This annoying problem takes only a few minutes to fix and makes the chair rather quiet.

Instructions

Turn the upholstered swivel chairs upside down so that noisy springs are accessed from that side. It may be necessary to remove a piece of fabric from the bottom of the chair to see the springs. Fine-needle nose pliers may be helpful for removing staples or tacks that hold the fabric in place. Listen closely to the springs as you tighten the seat of the chair. Try to identify where the creaks come from. Look for springs that are touching.

Apply a little silicone grease on a paper towel and rub it on any of the springs that are making noise. Compress the springs by pressing the seat after each application to see if the sounds have stopped. Thread a double layer of sealing tape around springs that are rubbing against some metal. Test the chair again by pressing the seat to compress the springs and see if you continue to hear creaks. Reposition the fabric to cover the springs at the base of the upholstered chair. Secure it by stapling or nailing the back tacks on the upholstered swivel chairs frame.
